Technical Terms

Automatic An electric step that deploys and stows as the door is opened and closed. It can be switched off when open or closed by switching the step off.
Cab entrance The front most doors, usually hinged, used to gain access to the cab area of a vehicle.
Control box An electronic unit designed to control a system such as a step or the electrical components on an entire vehicle.
Deep tread An additional 50mm added to the standard 250mm deep tread giving 300mm.
Electric Electric steps from AVS are powered by a 12v dc motor. The step will power in and power out by operating a switch or by opening a door as dictated by the specification.
Fitting kit A set of brackets and nut and bolts specifically designed to fit a certain type of step to a certain type of vehicle in the right position and height.
Fully automatic An electric step that deploys and stows as the door is opened and closed. It can be switched off when open or closed by switching the step off.
Kick-in-kick-out A term originally used to describe the foot operated steps in that they can be kicked in and kicked out. We would prefer that the steps were operated by foot rather than kicked!
Loom Lowering A piece of wiring often with plug and connections that forms part of a wiring harness
Manual The step is operated either by foot or by hand.
Nearside The side of the vehicle nearest the edge of the road, the passenger side, the kerb side, the RHS when seated in the driver's seat.
Product code Each code defines the step precisely e.g. K (cassette type), E (electric) 600 (tread width) B (motor type) Z (plug type). KE600BZ
Serial No There is a 6 figure serial number starting 00 on an aluminium AVS badge fitted to the front RHS of each step tread. This number will identify the precise specification of your front RHS of each step tread. This number will identify the precise specification of your step and is needed in order to arrange service, repair or spare parts.
Serial No badge This badge fitted to the front RHS of all step treads has the step serial number and the telephone number of AVS.
Side arm The aluminium bar down either side of the step tread and to which the rollers are attached
Side Entrance Passenger entrance, usually a sliding door to the rear of the cab area allowing access to the main passenger compartment.
Single arm A single arm is powered by the motor and is attached to the centre of the step tread.via a link arm.
Twin arm A system of 2 arms attached to 2 points on the step tread that push the step tread in and out, usually used on wider steps but available on 600mm upwards.
Universal fitting kit A kit designed to fit as many types of step to as many types of vehicle as possible. Sometimes extra parts or modifications may be needed.
Van conversion A modification of a vehicle that left the manufacturer as a van. Typically windows, floor, seats, wheelchair fitting are included along with steps.
Warning buzzer Used to indicate in manual and electric steps when a step is not fully stowed or is in motion. Can be connected to the ignition as well. A legal requirement on some vehicles.
Warning light A flashing red light that indicated when a step is not fully stowed, and operates from a micro switch fitted as standard to all AVS Steps. A legal requirement on some vehicles.
Wheelbase The distance between the front and rear wheel centres. This may be relevant on the choice of some steps, e.g. Long Wheelbase.
Z plug A 5 pin waterproof plug used on electric steps e.g. TE600BZ
Zig-zag edging Often called tiger stripe edging. Black and yellow highlighted edging to the front edge of step treads.
